Birthday Feature: Goodbye Roaring 20s {a glitz and glam 30th birthday celebration}

I don’t always throw costume parties…

Clinton's 30th Birthday-1073-2… but when I do, they are incredible!

My husband chose a 1920s theme for his 30th birthday.  So here is what I did:

I requested a rather tricky design from my favorite custom cake designer, Stellar Cakes and Cupcakes. I told Stella I wanted a shimmery gold cake, the Boardwalk Empire logo {but with OUR surname} and art deco accents.  She came through, as usual.  I went with my favorite of her fabulous cake flavors – lemon.  I don’t even like lemon desserts folks, but I could eat this cake all day.  My husband even loves her fondant!  Stella’s fondant tastes like marshmallow heaven.  Stella also made the cake at my daughter Ella’s 64 Zoo Lane themed birthday last summer {check out that cake and party details}.

It has become a tradition in our house to have Grammy {my creative mother} make custom clay cake toppers to match the celebration’s theme.  My husband took too long to decide on his costume, so she had to think of something on her own.  But you might notice as you scroll through photos that the tiny version of me matches my dress, hair and accessories!

You can see more of my mother’s work in my post about Ella’s 64 Zoo Lane themed birthday, my sweet and sassy safari baby shower post and also my daughter Maia’s music themed party on Kara’s Party Ideas.

Isn’t my husband adorable?  He rented his super fun attire from Vintage Costumers in Seattle.  They are a vintage clothing shop that will put together a costume for you to rent using their inventory.  Such a great idea.

We did our best to choose crowd pleasing appetizers.  The menu?  Saucy Bourbon Meatballs {recipe from the view from great island}, Sausage Stuffed Mushrooms, Pickled Prawns, Salmon Mousse and one of our family’s favorites – Trader Joe’s Feta and Carmelized Onion Pastry Bites.  Everything was delicious!  I might even be snacking on a few leftover meatballs as I write this…

We kept the beverage selection simple.  I am a fan of simple.  We served my favorite – Mionetto Prosecco, Backhouse Cabernet Sauvignon and we had Lucille on tap for the beer drinkers.

One of my favorite party details?  The glass markers on the wine and old fashioned champagne glasses.  Each glass is adorned with a different character from one of our favorite shows – Boardwalk Empire.  I cut these using my all time, most amazing, fantastic crafting tool – Silhouette Cameo.  I use this ALL the time!  Each name is about one inch in height.  They are tied onto the glasses using red embroidery floss.

I chose Chalky for my glass.

We had limited room for seating so we set up a few cocktail tables.

I love the pop of color from the red carnations.  Do you watch Boardwalk Empire?  If you are a fellow fan you probably have noticed that Nucky Thompson wears a red carnation on his jacket.  A cute note – I asked my husband to grab the red carnations while he was at the store.  He brought home two different shades of pink carnations instead.  Sigh.  Bless his little birthday boy heart.

Now for my favorite part of the evening.

A Richard Harrow mask!  I was pretty proud of myself for making this.

My friend Stephanie has a great blog as well, Tickled Pink in the Rain.  She uses and reviews a huge selection of subscription boxes.  Check her out!  She has some pretty cool giveaways.
