Tutorial: DIY Faux Marquee Sign

Live Faux Marquee Sign

Who doesn’t want to see their name in lights?

This was a pretty simple project and it turned out just as I pictured.

The tutorial I ended up following was a sign made for an Oscars party on Fiskars website designed by Lisa Storms.  There are several other fantastic movie themed DIY projects in Lisa’s post so you should check that out!

As with all DIY endeavors, it is often best to consult a few different tutorials and pick and choose the methods that will work best with your crafting expertise.

In following Lisa’s instructions, I found that there was an extra step that was necessary or my letters would have looked horrific when I painted them.

Faux Marquee Sign SuppliesI used Valspar Metallic paint in Brilliant Silver from Lowe’s, 8 inch cardboard letters from Joann Fabric, a small piece of sandpaper, a box cutter, small creamy white/yellow circles cut to 0.90 inches using my Silhouette Cameo and 3d foam adhesive squares (2 stacked on top of each other under each circle (supply not pictured here).

In Lisa’s instructions she did not mention having to smooth out the letters after cutting them in half, so maybe she is just incredibly awesome.

As you can see from my close up photo, the edges are pretty rough after you cut it {and that particular letter was not the worst one}.  So my advice is to run a piece of sand paper around the edges until they are as smooth as you’d like.

Also, something to think about when choosing your letters:  Some letters are easier to cut in half than others!

In this particular set {I am working on a few others still}, the L and I were simple enough, but the V and E were more difficult.  I have also done an M which was… well, not my favorite.

In the end I am loving my faux marquee sign!  This will be part of the FUN celebration decor at my daughter’s music themed birthday party on the 27th.  Check out the tutorial I posted last week on making treat cups that look like drums {also part of the upcoming music event}.  Watch for that event feature on the blog on the 30th!!

  1. Hey just wanted to give you a quick heads up and let you know a few of the images aren’t loading correctly.
I’m not sure why but I think its a linking issue. I’ve
tried it in two different internet browsers and both show the same results.
